LONDONAlmost 22 years after the controversial murder on the dance floor, singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor (44) has been acquitted. According to the British police, there is no evidence that the crime actually took place and that Ellis-Bextor was involved.

In 2002, then 22-year-old Sophie Ellis-Bextor described in detail a murder followed by arson in an English discotheque. Because Ellis-Bextor was the only one who reported the crime, she herself was considered a suspect. After a lengthy trial, the singer was acquitted this week due to a lack of evidence.

The dancefloor murder is one of the most publicized cold case murders in the UK. No body was found at the crime scene, the dance floor, at the time. Because after 22 years there is still no evidence that the murder actually took place, the British police have decided to permanently close the investigation. Ellis-Bextor will have to pay a fine for making a false report.
