As of today, NMBS will increase its fares by 5.9 percent. The special subscriptions for students are now also slightly more expensive. The Flemish Association of Students (VVS) reacts disappointed.

It was already announced in December 2023, but as of today it is a fact: almost all NMBS fares have increased in price by 5.9 percent. That increase should compensate for inflation.

This has also made student rates more expensive. The news comes amid increasing dissatisfaction with public transport in Flanders. The frustration surrounding De Lijn’s new transport plan is widespread. The punctuality of NMBS trains reached a historic low in 2023.

Student association dissatisfied

The various umbrella organizations for pupils, young people and students react with disappointment. The three umbrella organizations reported this in a joint statement. A survey by the student association among 10,996 students showed that for 7% of the students surveyed, the cost of public transport had already been a reason to choose another school.

A quarter of commuters commute because a room is too expensive for them

‘The announced price increase for the campus card is also a slap in the face for students,’ adds the Flemish Association of Students (VVS). Veto explained last year that commuting is not even a choice for many students: a quarter of commuters commute because a student room is too expensive for them.

More expensive and regularly unreliable public transport does not make things much better. Recent research has already pointed to a clear negative relationship between commuting and students’ study results.
