The average price of a used car in the Netherlands increased slightly in January 2024 compared to December 2023, according to figures from Autoscout24.

The average price of a used car on the Autoscout24 platform was 24,368 euros in January. That is 0.5 percent more than in December. Compared to January 2023, the used car price has fallen by 151 euros.

“The slight increase in average car prices in January 2024 shows that the second-hand car market in the Netherlands is fairly stable,” says Dorianne Richelle, country manager AutoScout24 Netherlands.

“Prices have only increased modestly compared to last year, which is a sign that supply and demand are in balance. Car buyers and car companies can therefore reasonably expect that market conditions are favorable for both the sale and purchase of used cars. So if you are looking for a used car, this is a good time to look,” says Richelle.

Asking price

AMV reported two weeks ago that they saw ‘the largest difference between search price and asking price ever’. The average asking price in December on AMV portals fell to 23,430 euros, while consumers were on average looking for a car worth 17,406 euros. Used car buyers were prepared to spend more than 50,000 euros for a hybrid car.

The most popular car brands consumers searched for last year were Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Ford. In terms of models, the Golf, Polo, 3 Series, A3 and Focus are at the top. Buyers are mainly looking for a petrol car. After that, hybrid (petrol) and diesel are particularly popular. Car buyers are less interested in electric used cars, according to AMV figures.
