In previous top games against Anderlecht (competition) and Antwerp (cup), OH Leuven was already good, but could not win. They succeeded in that against Racing Genk. And whether there was a party at Den Dreef on Wednesday evening. “Today we got what we perhaps deserved before.”

There was little to do between OH Leuven and Racing Genk in the first half. The Limburgers were in charge, without creating many opportunities. “We couldn’t deal with Genk’s agility,” coach Oscar Garcia analyzed. “After the break we handled it better and found more openings ourselves.”

OHL indeed seemed to reinvent itself after the break. There was a fire visible from the start of the second half, although Genk did take the lead thanks to an own goal from Ricca. Schrijvers and Pletinckx managed to turn the tide. “I have to congratulate my players because they were fantastic,” Garcia said. “We had already shown in previous matches that we can fight until the end, also in the cup. We have to fight until the 95th or 96th minute. Then anything is possible. That’s what we did today and that’s the mentality I like. Today we got what we perhaps deserved before, against Anderlecht or Antwerp.”

When Pletinckx scored the winning goal in the 90th minute, Den Dreef went completely crazy. We haven’t experienced that in a long time. “Our fans are incredible,” says Garcia. “They support us always and everywhere. This victory is for them.” After the game, when his players headed to the locker room after the celebrations, Garcia stirred up the OHL supporters once again. He also knows that he will still need them in the coming weeks.

Rest also takes points

Charleroi’s victory leaves OHL within three points of the safe zone at the bottom, and yet the three-pointer against Genk was incredibly rewarding in Leuven. “I was tired of telling my players they deserved more,” Garcia said. “I am happy that we have now made it happen. But we can’t stay happy here, because the rest also get points.”

Because of the great victory you would almost forget that OHL still urgently needs a striker. “Do I expect another rush hour tomorrow on the last day of the mercato? I’ve been expecting that all month, but I keep hoping. The club knows the needs,” concludes the Spanish coach.
