Link with the Netherlands
Antal Dorati is often a guest with Dutch orchestras. In 1950 he was a guest in the Netherlands for the first time. He then conducts the Residentie Orchestra in The Hague. In 1952 he was a guest for the first time with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. He will conduct, among others, the first piano concerto by Franz Liszt with pianist Cor de Groot and the Hary János Suite by Zoltán Kodály. NRC was there and is very critical: “Antal Dorati has a special sensitivity for sound and rhythm, which favorable quality is, however, weakened by a strong tendency to be beautiful.” And: “The Suite “Hary Janos” by Kodaly, colorful, pleasant and illustrative music for the stage, was done much better by Dorati, but his reproducing talent has little depth, to put it mildly.” Later the tide turns and he is praised for his beautiful interpretations. In the Netherlands, Dorati also conducts other orchestras, including the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. During the Holland Festivals of 1952, 1956, 1961 and 1981 he conducts Hertog Blaubaards Burcht van Belá Bartok.
