The new code of conduct outlines how judges should behave. It states, among other things, that they should not be influenced by people around them. American media had reported in recent months that conservative judges such as Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito were treating themselves to luxury trips without giving up. That also led to political outrage.

Other American judges already had to adhere to a code of conduct. In the United States, the Supreme Court often has the final say on politically sensitive issues, such as the right to abortion. The members are appointed for life. The Supreme Court emphasizes in a statement that the judges have actually already adhered to the principles that are now stated in black and white in the code of conduct.

Several Supreme Court justices had publicly called for ethics rules for themselves and their colleagues after the scandals. According to American media, it is still unclear who will monitor compliance with the new code of conduct.
