Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit the US for the first time in six years this week. On the sidelines of the meeting between Joe Biden and Xi Jinping, the Chinese president will participate in a gala dinner with American business leaders on Wednesday. They pay as much as $40,000 for a seat at Xi Jinping’s table.

The Chinese president comes to the US for an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in San Francisco. He will also meet with US President Joe Biden this week. They will discuss, among other things, important issues related to “world peace and global development”.

Before the APEC summit, there will be a gala dinner on Wednesday where the top American business community is expected to participate. The guest list is not known, according to Reuters. The most senior executives from oil company ExxonMobil, software producer Microsoft and pharmaceutical company Pfizer are expected to be present.

Earlier this year, China welcomed prominent businessmen, including CEO Jamie Dimon of the major bank JPMorgan Chase, Tim Cook of Apple and Tesla boss Elon Musk to discuss US-China trade relations and the investment climate in China.

Tensions between China and US

Tensions between China and the US in economic areas have increased considerably in recent years. According to the Biden administration, communication at the highest level is in the interest of the global economy. A dinner with the Chinese president seems like an opportunity to improve lines of communication.

This does come with a price for business leaders. According to ‘Newsweek’ they pay $2,000 per person to attend the reception and dinner. Companies that pay $40,000 get eight seats at the table, plus one seat for the CEO at the table with the Chinese president.
