MATCH REPORTAA Gent and Anderlecht shared the points after a mediocre top match. Both goals came before the break. Matisse Samoise gave the Buffaloes the lead, Kasper Dolberg equalized from the spot.
AA Gent, with Orban on the bench, started energetically. The ball moved around smoothly and on the left Archie Brown was able to push through again and again. The home team was dominant without really creating opportunities. Tissoudali got into a shooting position but the ball was never right in front of his foot. Anderlecht placed a medium-low block and waited. AA Gent took the well-deserved lead when a shot from Samoise – with his left – deviated from Delaney and fluttered over Schmeichel into the goal. But it is a season in which the gods favor Anderlecht. Without being well into the match, the Purple & White tied the score as the game progressed. Dolberg converted a penalty after a foul in the box by Watanabe.
Same game pattern after halftime. AA Gent camped in Anderlecht’s half, which could barely escape the entrapment. Samoise got the hang of it and tried again from a distance; Schmeichel saved with his fists. The spectators became increasingly annoyed with ref Vergoote.
Anderlecht had difficulty with the pressing, Thorgan Hazard was not in the match up front. After an hour Leoni came. Orban arrived twenty minutes before the end. Ghent lacked the finesse to demolish the wall. Anderlecht didn’t want to, AA Gent couldn’t. The television viewer will have found this boring.
Brown: “All teams can beat it, it’s a shame it doesn’t work out”
The disappointment could still be read on Archie Brown’s face after the match. “I play football to win and today I couldn’t do that. So I cannot be satisfied here,” said the Ghent defender. “We were in control the entire match and created so many chances. We can beat all teams, above and below us. Then it’s a shame that we can’t do that today.”
Rits: “Despite little possession of the ball, not much was given away”
Delaney: “Lacks personality on the ball”
