Anderlecht signed Thorgan Hazard last summer for 4 million euros away from Borussia Dortmund. “I had been following developments at the club closely all summer and I was impressed by the mercato, the quality of the club’s core and the discourse. I really wanted to be part of this project,” he said at his arrival in Brussels.
CEO Sports Jesper Fredberg was also delighted with this prestige transfer at the beginning of September. “Here at RSC Anderlecht we have great ambitions for the future. The arrival of Thorgan Hazard is further proof of this. Thorgan is a Belgian international, experienced and he fits the profile we were looking for: he is technically skilled, offensive-minded and has yet also that physical and aggressive aspect in his game. Above all, he is still very hungry to achieve success with us.”
Hazard keeps getting better
Hazard had a season last year in which he played little, he played for Dortmund and then on loan at PSV. He was physically fit, but… lacked match rhythm. Brian Riemer handled him carefully and therefore never once played the entire game. Last weekend he was replaced after 86 minutes. Hazard also indicated that he needed time and the Purple and White fans saw him systematically improving.
His connection with striker Kasper Dolberg and Anders Dreyer, the other wing attacker, gradually got better and better. The turning point came on October 7 against KV Mechelen. Hazard provided his first assist and afterwards he also did the same against Standard. But in Liège he had to leave with cramps after a very tough first hour. Hazard was very present against Oud-Heverlee Leuven and especially Cercle Brugge. Against the people of Bruges, he was a scourge for the Bruges defense with his dribbling, combinations in short space and passing.
Free role at Anderlecht
Hazard is posted on the left flank on paper, but Riemer is allowed to wander across the field. He pops up on the left, centrally and often on the right to create surplus situations. Hazard is a creative player who makes Anderlecht much better. Since arriving at Lotto Park, Anderlecht has scored 19 goals in 7 games. A punishing average of just under three goals per match. Anderlecht scored 7 times in 6 matches for him. An average of just over a goal per game.
Hazard has not yet scored himself, but he makes Anderlecht’s attacking game run a lot smoother. Due to his good performance, sounds are also made to summon him at the Red Devils. Against AA Gent, Hazard gets the chance to assert himself in a top match. Will his first goal for Anderlecht follow?
