MATCH REPORTThe performance was questionable, but Club Brugge was qualified for the next round of the Conference League after Thursday evening. A boost in difficult times for blue-black, which won 2-0 against FC Lugano.
LOOK. Vanaken: “Happy with qualification, game could be better”
The European matches this season often proved to be a remedy for a searching Club Brugge. It remained to be seen whether Lugano would also fall under that heading at home, four days after the blow in the Duden Park. Ronny Deila changed his team in six positions. Buchanan was back, the other five substitutions were a combination of rotation and tactical substitutions. Meijer, Spileers, Jutglà, Nielsen and Balanta already disappeared from the team. A win against Lugano was enough for Club to qualify for the next round after Bodø won against Besiktas earlier in the evening.
Weak first half
Club had to respond after Sunday, but that certainly didn’t happen in a weak first half. The people of Bruges had difficulty with the high pressure from Lugano. There was no good football, nor much dominance or opportunities. Blauw-zwart had a few good phases, including just before half-time. Zinckernagel missed the biggest chance for the home team – he aimed at the visiting goalkeeper from close range. Jan Breydel gradually showed his dissatisfaction during the first half. With every ball backwards the fans started whistling. The 0-0 score halfway was also a huge disappointment for them.
Thiago from the spot
Deila threw Jutglà into the fray – Skov Olsen, with or without hindrance, remained behind in the dressing room. After a weak start to the second half, Club finally took control. It did not immediately lead to many opportunities, until Buchanan pushed all the way into the sixteen meters from the right. The Canadian was knocked over – penalty for Club. Thiago claimed the ball and put Club up 1-0.

The home team did better now – Thiago quickly forgot to decide the match. Halfway through the second half things became difficult again for Club. With first an open goal opportunity, which was kicked against Ordoñez, and then a good blow on Mignolet’s fists, Lugano came close to scoring twice. The match fizzled into the final quarter – Jutglà also failed to score 2-0. Shortly after his goal attempt, the Catalan also scored a penalty. After Thiago, Jutglà also sent Vanaken walking. However, the striker missed from the spot differently than his colleague. And so it remained exciting with five minutes left on the clock.
In the end, Club won the three points and the qualification, Vanaken made it 2-0 with a deflected free kick. After a mediocre, even poor performance, which gives anything but confidence to Deila and his players. The derby against neighbor Cercle on Sunday will be a different story. Club will have to change things up if they want to go into the international break with a somewhat good feeling.
De Cuyper: “The manner in which it was done was not important”
“Job done,” Maxim De Cuyper was clear after the match. “That was the most important thing today. The manner in which you play is not super important, especially on a difficult field against a difficult opponent. It was important that we kept the three points here at home and that we are now certain of European wintering. Within 5-6 weeks no one will remember how we played. The points count. If it’s in an ugly way, so be it.”
