The court has sentenced a 45-year-old man, who tried to kill his ex-girlfriend in Hertzogstraat in The Hague at the beginning of this year, to 12 years in prison. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) had demanded a 14-year prison sentence.
The Turkish-Kurdish woman had ended her relationship with the man and had started a new serious relationship with someone else. Naim G. could not stomach this and demanded text and explanation. On January 17, 2023, he waited for the victim at her home in the Transvaal district. When the woman left her home and walked to the car, G. seized his chance. He walked up to her, grabbed a gun and shot the woman straight in the face.
“If the bullet had gone a few millimeters further into her face, she would no longer be there,” the prosecutor said earlier. A witness later told the police that she saw the victim lying on the ground. The suspect was standing above her and again pointed his weapon at her face. But the weapon malfunctioned, allowing the woman to run away. Naim G. fled and was eventually arrested in the home of a relative in Groenlo in Gelderland.
No responsibility taken
When determining the sentence, the court also took the suspect’s attitude into account. Although the suspect admitted that he shot, he mainly placed the blame outside himself and took no responsibility in that regard. Nor has he shown any empathy for the victim or genuine remorse for shooting his ex-girlfriend straight in the face.
The shooter must also pay the victim compensation of more than 59,000 euros.
