A homeless man from New Zealand won $100,000 in one fell swoop during the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday with a $5 bet. “It was a really emotional process,” he says The New Zealand Herald.

Robert decided to gamble during the ‘Without a Fight’ race of the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday. He bet his $5 on jockey Mark Zahra, who finished first in the horse race. The New Zealand man from Wellington, who told his story The New Zealand Herald, told how stunned he was when he suddenly saw the balance on his account.

“It was an emotional process. I couldn’t believe it and told myself something had probably gone wrong,” he said. After a quick check of his account, he realized it was true. He had won 106,000 New Zealand dollars, good for about 55,600 euros. A significant amount for Robert who has been living in a garage for the past few months.

“I’m going from the homeless man who sat in a garage to the man who can finally provide a rental deposit.”
