Taipei, Nov. 8 (CNA) Actor Chris Wang (宥勝) was indicted by the Taipei District Prosecutors Office on Wednesday for molesting a woman in 2016.
According to a statement issued by the office, the woman allegedly molested wrote about what happened to her on Facebook in June 2023, about seven years after the alleged incident.
It was then reported to the Taichung District Prosecutors Office by an anonymous person who read the post, and the Taichung office transferred the case to the Taipei prosecutors office because it had jurisdiction over the case.
The indictment alleged that the incident occurred after Wang offered to take the woman home following work because it was on the way to where he was going.
The woman agreed, and drove Wang in his car to her residence. Once there, Wang asked if could use the bathroom before heading on his way, but he would not leave after relieving himself, the indictment said.
Wang then touched the woman and tried to remove some of her clothing against her will, according to the indictment.
Taipei prosecutors recommended that Wang be punished based on Article 224 of the Criminal Code, which stipulates that a person who commits an obscene act against another individual’s shall be given a jail sentence ranging from six months to a maximum of five years.
When the case emerged in the public eye in June 2023 with the Facebook post, Wang responded by saying: “I’m really sorry for traumatizing them. I feel extremely sorry, and I am not going to try to get out of the mistakes I maggot.”
The prosecutors office, meanwhile, said it found two other women who had accused Wang of sexually harassing them, including one who posted her experience on Facebook, but neither of them filed criminal charges against Wang.
Because the two did not file charges, the prosecutors said they could not meet the legal requirements stipulated in the Sexual Harassment Prevention Act for indicting Wang for sexual harassment.
