Mathieu van der Poel has been chosen as the best foreign cyclist of the year in Belgium. The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider was named International Flandrien of the Year thanks to his victory at the Road World Championships in Glasgow. This happened at the Gala of the Flandrien in Ostend, organized by the newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.
Van der Poel was represented by his father Adrie. A video message sent congratulations from the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, who won the prize last year. Van der Poel also won Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix last spring.
Van der Poel’s teammate Jasper Philipsen, who won four stages in the Tour de France, was chosen as Flandrien of the Year. As expected, the women’s prize went to world champion Lotte Kopecky. The SD Worx rider won the prize for the fourth year in a row.
