Leading role for Xavi Simons at RB Leipzig, Antwerp remains at ‘zero’ after red Jurgen Ekkelenkamp | Foreign football

--

Partly thanks to a goal from Dutch international Xavi Simons, RB Leipzig has qualified for the knockout phase of the Champions League. The 20-year-old midfielder scored the opening goal during a 2-1 win at Red Star Belgrade. In the same group, leader Manchester City won 3-0 against Young Boys.

Manchester City leads Group G with 12 points, 3 more than Leipzig. Red Star and Young Boys both have 1 point and have to focus on third place, which entitles them to a place in the interim round of the Europa League.

Simons, who scored his first goal in the Champions League two weeks ago during the home game against Red Star (3-1), scored in Belgrade in the 8th minute. After a dribble he aimed the ball into the far corner, 1-0. Former Vitesse striker Loïs Openda made it 2-0 for Leipzig fifteen minutes before the end. Leipzig defender Benjamin Henrichs was credited with the 2-1 after he had mishandled a ball into his own goal.

Manchester City had few problems with Young Boys. Erling Haaland opened the scoring from the penalty spot halfway through the first half, after which Phil Foden doubled the lead (2-0) just before half time after an individual action. Haaland made it 3-0 in the 51st minute with a beautiful shot from distance. Two minutes later, Young Boys had to play with ten men after Sandro Lauper received his second yellow card for a tackle on substitute Nathan Aké.

Mark van Bommel

Antwerp is still winless after four matches in the Champions League. This time, coach Mark van Bommel’s team lost 2-0 at FC Porto. Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, one of the three Dutchmen in the starting line-up for the Belgian national champions, had to be sent off in the 52nd minute.

It was already 1-0 for the home team. Substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens made a good save from Pepê’s effort after half an hour, but in an attempt to use the rebound, Stephen Eustáquio was illegally hindered by Gyrano Kerk. Evanilson converted the awarded penalty. Lammens replaced Jean Butez in Porto, who had stayed at home with his heavily pregnant wife.

Antwerp lost Ekkelenkamp shortly after the break. The ex-Ajax player hit the Nigerian Zaidu Sanusi hard. The violation was initially punished with yellow, but after advice from the VAR it became red. Owen Wijndal, the third Dutchman in the starting lineup, received a yellow card. Vincent Janssen only came onto the field for the last fifteen minutes. He saw how 40-year-old defender Pepe made it 2-0 in extra time.

AC Milan is participating again

AC Milan recorded its first victory. The Italian team of Dutch international Tijjani Reijnders defeated Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 in a spectacular match. In the same group, Borussia Dortmund won 2-0 against Newcastle United earlier in the evening. Dortmund leads the group with 7 points, ahead of Paris Saint-Germain (6 points). AC Milan is on 5 points, 1 point more than Newcastle United.

After a shot by Olivier Giroud, Rafael Leão scored the rebound with a bicycle kick, 1-1. Ousmane Dembélé hit the crossbar on behalf of PSG before halftime. Reijnders shot wide in the early stages of the second half, but Milan still made it 2-1 in the 50th minute. While Leão was injured in the goal area, Giroud headed in a cross from Theo Hernández.
