When Derek and Nancy Haysom are murdered in 1985, a shock ripples through the Bedford County community: why would anyone want to kill this beloved society couple? The two were brutally slaughtered: their throats were slit and they were stabbed several times with a knife. In addition, forensic specialists discover that strange symbols have been carved into their skin, which quickly leads them to believe they are Satanists. Could there be an evil cult behind the murder?
The answer turns out to be much closer to home, because the police soon spot the couple’s daughter, Elizabeth, and her then partner Jens Soering. The two know each other from their studies and fall in love. When they hear that the police have them in their sights, they flee abroad. Two years later, the couple is extradited to the United States, after which Jens admits to being the murderer. Elizabeth says she is complicit.
Remarkably, Jens changes his mind and announces years later that Elizabeth, not he, committed the murders. Jens himself also speaks in the documentary and paints a gruesome picture of what he believes happened. But with two master manipulators, it turns out not to be that easy to find out who actually committed the murders at the time. Viewers are therefore left with many questions after watching the documentary.
