Why football has a problem with match-fixing

Earlier this year, a report shed a light on football and match-fixing. It went slightly under the radar. But it’s a genuinely big problem in world football — and the statistics in the report prove it.

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) says football and tennis accounted for over half of suspicious sporting incidents in the third quarter of 2023.

It tallies with incidents over the last few seasons — even at the highest levels of the game.

The Athletic spoke to three experts to explain how match-fixing works, how widespread it is, whether fans should be worried — and why football is a sport that is susceptible to it.

Group F so far: PSG

For PSG, things have worked out better so far.

Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi struck to give the Parisians a 2-0 home win against Dortmund to kick off the group, before a 4-1 humbling on Tyneside against a Newcastle side that ran riot.

They then eased past Milan in the French capital. So far, a big difference between their home and away form in Europe.

And the San Siro will certainly provide an electric atmosphere tonight…

Group F so far: Milan

So far in Europe this season, Milan could and perhaps should have done better.

In their group-opening match at San Siro, they dominated Newcastle but could only draw 0-0. They recorded another goalless draw away at Dortmund, despite a more creditable result.

Then, at the Parc des Princes in the reverse fixture, they were soundly beaten, 3-0 after goals from Mbappe, Randal Kolo Muani and Lee.

The positives? Two of their last three games in the group are at home. The negatives? In those two games they face two of Europe’s biggest clubs, and their remaining away match is at Newcastle’s fortress St James’ Park.

Last time out: PSG

While PSG were last in action against Montpellier on Friday.

They won comfortably, though, 3-0 at the Parc des Princes.

Goals from Lee Kang-in, the brilliant young talent Warren Zaire-Emery and Vitinha saw Luis Enrique’s men take all three points.

They are second in Ligue 1 after 11 games, a point ahead of Monaco and a point behind leaders Nice.

Last time out: Milan

Milan’s last game was a 1-0 loss against Udinese on Saturday.

Former Watford midfielder Roberto Pereyra’s penalty just after the hour mark was the only goal of the game.

After 11 Serie A games, that result left Milan in third, six points behind rivals and league leaders Inter and four points behind second-placed Juventus.

Work to do for manager Stefano Pioli.

How is the group shaping up?

This is really The Group of Death. AC Milan must consider themselves really unlucky this year.

At the moment, exactly halfway through the group stage, Milan lie bottom of Group F with two points, with PSG at the top with six (this is a picture of the table before Borussia Dortmund host Newcastle at 5.45pm GMT).

But things can still change oh so quickly. A win on home turf for Milan tonight and they move just a point behind the French outfit. A Milan win, and a draw in Germany, would see PSG on six points and the other three teams in the group on five.

A long way to go yet.
