LOS ANGELES – US police are investigating the death of a 69-year-old Jewish man at a pro-Palestinian protest in California. Paul Kessler was on Sunday in the city of Thousand Oaks, about 40 miles west of Los Angeles, where both a pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli demonstration were taking place, when he suffered a head wound during an altercation. He died in hospital on Monday. Police are investigating his death and have not ruled out a hate crime, The Los Angeles Times reports.

According to those present, the man was hit on the head with a megaphone by a pro-Palestinian demonstrator. Police could not confirm these details, but said a blow to the head caused the man to fall backwards to the ground. The police, who had responded to “a fight,” found the victim there with the head wound. Police Chief Jeff Gorell said on X that he is “heartbroken over the death of the elderly man.” No one has been arrested yet.
