A Filipino radio host was shot dead this morning while broadcasting his radio show live on Facebook. The shooter posed as a listener and was able to enter the presenter’s house.

Images circulating on social media show presenter Juan Jumalon briefly looking up before being shot twice. The perpetrator grabs the presenter’s gold chain and flees. According to the Philippine police, his accomplice was waiting outside with a motorcycle. The identity of the perpetrator and his accomplice are not known.

Jumalon always broadcast his radio program via Facebook. His page has about 2,400 followers.

199th murdered journalist

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos condemned the attack on the journalist. “Attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy and those who threaten press freedom will face the consequences of their actions,” Marcos said in a post on social media platform X.

The Philippines is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists. Jumalon is the 199th journalist to be murdered since the country became a democracy in 1986, according to Philippine media watchdog National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP).
