A flash, a moment’s delay and the bird had taken flight. Michael Vanthourenhout and Eli Iserbyt have decided the European Cyclo-cross Championships with one action. The teammates at Pauwels Sauzen-Bingoal easily outpaced the opposition. Vanthourenhout also had the legs to complete a long solo of 50 minutes. “I was able to go full throttle from start to finish,” says the two-time European champion.
“We have taken full advantage of his card.”
Eli Iserbyt has little difficulty in admitting that he favors Michael Vanthourenhout with the new European title.
“I therefore tailored my match to Michael. He gave a good impression, we discussed it in the first rounds,” says his teammate at Pauwels Sauzen – Bingoal.
“I’m happy that he was able to finish it. He certainly didn’t steal it, because I saw that he quickly became the better one in these conditions. The Belgian team did a very good job.”
I was able to go from start to finish.
Together they decided the course. Vanthourenhout continued, Iserbyt was happy to leave the gap. And so the first one was presented with a satisfying victory.
“Eli shouted at me that I could try,” he says in an initial response. “A big thank you to him and the Belgian team is in order. It’s great that something like this is still possible in contemporary cyclo-cross.”
