The number of bicycles stolen in recent weeks from the guarded bicycle shed at Halle station is increasing. Cyclists’ association Halle is fed up with the situation and asks NMBS, the city and the police to urgently find a solution.
“There is a real plague of theft going on at Halle station,” says Lesley De Cruz of Cyclists’ Union Halle. “Bicycles disappear every week, not only from the unguarded racks on Stationsplein but also from the secure bicycle shed of the NMBS. Cyclists pay up to 75 euros per year to safely leave their bicycles here. If you have to find that your expensive bike has been stolen when you return from work or a night out, that is a real disappointment.”
“The security system no longer stops bicycle thieves. Solutions must be urgently sought,” De Cruz continues. “It sounds great that the city is encouraging people to come to the station by bicycle, but then those cyclists must also be able to count on safe bicycle parking, especially if they pay for it. We call on the NMBS, the city and the Zennevallei police to tackle this problem together because things cannot continue like this.”
As long as there is no solution, the Cyclists’ Union recommends using an extra strong lock, or better yet several locks, and taking out insurance against bicycle theft.
