Taipei, Nov. 5 (CNA) A three-year-old boy died on Saturday after a scooter driven by his mother slammed into the back of a car parked on the side of County Highway No.165 in Chiayi, according to local authorities.

In a press release on Sunday, the Chiayi County Fire Bureau said it received a report at 3:36 pm Saturday about two people injured in a car-scooter accident near Zhongzhuang Village in Shuishang Township.

After arriving at the scene, emergency responders found the boy suffering from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), along with his 22-year-old mother, who suffered cuts and scrapes but remained conscious.

Both the mother and her son were sent to Chaiyi’s St. Martin De Porres Hospital, where the boy was later pronounced dead, the fire bureau said.

According to the police, the accident is believed to have been caused by the mother, who apparently failed to monitor the road conditions and slammed the scooter carrying her and her son into a sedan parked on the road’s shoulder.

The exact circumstances of the crash are still being investigated, police said.
