A tree fell on the road on the A79 near Meerssen on Thursday morning. A car was hit. The two occupants were injured.
The accident happened around 11:20 am. The damage to the car with a German license plate is extensive. The two occupants were removed from the car by emergency services, according to a police spokesperson. They were both injured and are being examined by paramedics. They have now been transported to hospital.
The highway is temporarily closed in the direction of Heerlen. A long traffic jam has formed behind the accident. The fire brigade is working to saw the tree into pieces and clear the highway. The heavily damaged car is towed away by a recovery company. Rijkswaterstaat reports on X that the A79 is expected to be opened at 1 p.m.

The road was closed to allow emergency services to do their work, but some motorists ignored the red crosses above the road. They have been ticketed, the police said.
