The American show jumping team had a fantastic day at the Pan American Games in Santiago. All four team members remained clear today in the all-deciding round of the Nations Cup and brought the team from fifth place to gold. McLain Ward and Contagious (by Contagio) lead individually and his teammate Laura Kraut follows in second place with Dorado 212 (by Diarado’s Boy).
Defending champion Brazil started the first part of the team competition yesterday excellently and took the lead with 4.32 penalty points. Colombia followed in the provisional silver position (7.29 penalties) and Canada in bronze (9.62). America collected 12.37 penalty points on the first day and therefore did not seem to be a direct podium candidate.
America delivers
In the first round on the final day, Ward, Kraut and Kent Farrington remained clear with Landon, Karl Cook received 12 penalties with Caracole de la Roque and thus became the clear result. In the second round, all four team members remained clear, leaving the team with 12.37 penalties.
Bad luck for Brazil and Modolo Zanotelli
Things went wrong for Brazil right away in the first round. Pedro Veniss and Rodrigo Pessoa received a bar, Marlon Modolo Zanotelli, who led individually after the first day, left the track with 21 penalties. Only Stephan de Freitas Barcha remained clean. In the second lap, Veniss and De Freita Barcha limited the damage by driving zero, Pessoa received 8 penalty points. Modolo Zanotelli had even more bad luck, after four bars he got a stop on the first element of the double and decided to say goodbye. This gave Brazil a total of 20.32 penalty points.
Silver for Canada
Team Canada incurred 8 penalties in the first round, but in the second round three of the four team members remained clear. This resulted in a total of 17.62 penalties, enough to rob Brazil of the silver, but not good enough to keep America from the gold.
Ward in the lead
After the first two parts it is McLain Ward who takes the individual lead. The agile Contagious has 3.34 penalty points, but is closely followed by Kraut (3.39) and De Freitas Barcha (4.06). The differences at the top of the rankings are small and anything can happen in the individual final.
