History at the O2 Arena. Michael van Gerwen has won the Premier League for the seventh time. He is now the record holder. The Dutchman defeated Gerwyn Price (11-5) in the final, thanks in part to a 170 finish. “I played as cunning as a fox.”

The Premier League darts came to a close with the play-offs. Gerwyn Price and Michael Smith played the grand final at the O2 Arena in London. Price edged out Clayton 10–2 in his semifinal. Van Gerwen then floored Smith (10-8), who urged the audience not to whistle at the Dutchman. Nice moment.

Price was the top favorite for many to take the trophy. But Van Gerwen wanted to show that he is still the best darts player in the world. He did this with a wonderful 170 finish, also known as ‘The Big Fish’. Price had no answer and actually faced a 7-2 deficit.

Van Gerwen did not relinquish his lead and took it 11-5, good for his seventh Premier League title. An absolute record. The legendary Phil Taylor won the prestigious darts event six times in his career. Also to add: Van Gerwen earns no less than 312,000 euros thanks to his victory.

“I did it again today,” said the winner at Rudy Lanssens in London. “I immediately grabbed my opponents by the throat. You have to be ready to hurt them right away. I was as cunning as a fox. I did what I had to do at the right times. I threw such averages, yes, this gives a good feeling. I was also a bit annoyed. People always have an opinion. But I am the right man to shut them all up.” Seven times so ‘MvG’ now won the Premier League. “But that is not enough. (wink) Next year the eighth.”
