The Greek police have succeeded in solving the murder of Belgian drug smuggler Kristof Waegeman (47). The ‘businessman’ was killed in cold blood with two bullets to the head on May 29, 2020 in Voula, an exclusive suburb of Athens. The investigators were in the dark for a long time about the identity of the shooter, but after three years they were able to find a match with an Albanian assassin: Marius Diamanti.

Almost three years ago, the Belgian ‘businessman’ Kristof Waegeman was murdered in the Greek capital Athens. Waegeman was shot dead at the entrance of his apartment in Dodekanisoustraat in Voula, a luxurious suburb of Athens, by an unknown gunman. Just as the victim had parked his Swiss-registered Volvo SUV in front of his rental home, the gunman struck by drawing a 9mm gun and putting two bullets through the Belgian’s head. The shooter was able to escape through the narrow streets of Athens.

False identity

Giorgos Christoforos, an identity he had adopted, lived in an Airbnb home with his Brazilian wife and two-year-old child for more than two years. While the Greek police still had no idea of the identity of the victim, Waegeman’s name was already circulating in the Antwerp criminal environment. In addition to a large sum of cash, he also turned out to have two passports in his pocket. Because there was an arrest warrant against him, he moved in the country with forged papers under the name Giorgos Christoforos. According to his wife, who was questioned by the police on the spot, the victim would work as a consultant for a company in Athens. In reality, he had a laundry list of convictions including drug possession, drug trafficking, narcotics importation, money laundering and membership in a criminal organization.

In 2015, the Court of Appeal in Antwerp sentenced him to a prison term of twelve years as the leader of a drug gang that allegedly imported cocaine on a large scale through the port of Antwerp.

‘death contract’

Three years later, the Greek police have finally been able to stick an identity on Kristof Waegeman’s shooter. It turns out to be 35-year-old Albanian Marius Diamanti alias Mario Dimanti, owner of a gas station in Athens. According to certain sources, Waegeman would have been held responsible for a lost batch of coke. As a result, the Albanian assassin Marius Diamanti was ordered to kill the ‘Belgian businessman’ Kristof Waegeman.

One year later, Diamanti himself was murdered at his gas station. The Albanian turned out to be moving under a false identity because of his criminal past. He appeared several times in various cases, including drugs and murder.
