Based on code from iOS 16 and leaks from reliable sources, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are expected to have an always-on display. We are now getting more tangible information about how this display would work.

This information comes from MacRumors (opens in new tab) and takes a closer look at different parts of the always-on display. For example, widgets will be visible on the lock screen. They can appear and then disappear on their own so that the screen will not burn in.

The optional depth effect of backgrounds can also be removed and darkened in this mode. The foreground is dimmed and can be given a certain color tone that users can set themselves.

Notifications and more

It seems that settings such as wallpaper, colors, fonts and widgets are carried over from the regular lock screen to the always-on display. So you will not be able to set up two completely separate screens.

Notifications will float at the bottom of the screen in always-on mode and you can choose to have a counter appear that keeps track of the number of notifications. In addition, it seems that other elements of the notifications can be adjusted.

Also, the status bar will be reshaped to take advantage of the extra space created by the pill-shaped cut-out, which will replace the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro (Max). We’ll find out for sure at Apple’s event on Wednesday, September 7th.

Analysis: the Pro models go a step further

The always-on display is one of several upgrades rumored to be exclusive to the Pro and Pro Max models of the iPhone 14. Apple has clearly made the decision to split its flagship devices into two categories.

Judging by the leaks, the Pro and Pro Max models get a brand new A16 Bionic processor, while the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max keep the A15 Bionic chipset from the current iPhone 13 series. Apple would also continue to take that approach for future iPhone series.

There is then even better screen technology in the iPhone 14 Pro (Max). Combine that with all the usual benefits of the Pro models, including an improved camera system, and you’ll notice a big jump from standard iPhone 14 to iPhone 14 Pro (Max).

That should probably ensure that more people will buy the more expensive iPhones. On the other hand, the iPhone 14 feels like a smaller upgrade compared to the iPhone 13. We are curious how well this new strategy will work out for Apple.
