Anyone who combines a VDI solution from Citrix or VMware with Microsoft Teams will soon be able to blur or replace backgrounds.

Teams, but also Zoom and Google Meet have been allowing you to blur the background during a video call for a while. This is useful when that background is distracting, or when you work from home and you have no intention of sharing your living space with the world. However, for Teams, the feature does not work on all hardware. Anyone running Microsoft’s collaboration application in a VDI environment cannot manipulate the background.

Citrix and VMware

That is now changing. Microsoft is adding background effects to Teams within Citrix and VMware’s VDI solutions. According to the roadmap, the functionality will be available this month.

Teams is a success story for Microsoft. Last year the solution had 250 million monthly active users and at the beginning of this year there were already 270 million. With more functionality for Teams on VDI, Microsoft hopes to increase the number of users. The competition is fierce, as Cisco, Zoom and Google, among others, prey on the same users. However, Microsoft has a major advantage: it provides Teams as part of its Microsoft 365 suite, which means that the additional cost for many organizations is limited or even non-existent.
