Nearly a quarter of Windows computers are vulnerable because they contain outdated software. This is evident from research by the Consumers’ Association. Because the software is not updated, security risks arise.

The Consumers’ Association analyzed the data from almost 1,200 PCs. Just over half (54%) of computers had Windows 10 as the operating system. The rest mainly used Windows 11. A small number (7) had an older Windows version. There was insufficient data available on Apple computers to conduct proper research.

180 computers still contained very old software, which has reached the end of its lifespan and is therefore no longer receiving updates. The manufacturer therefore no longer repairs any vulnerabilities, which makes the software unsafe. This usually involved Microsoft Office, Picasa, Windows Live Essentials or Microsoft Works.

Just over 150 PCs were using outdated software with serious risks. In most cases this involved packaging software WinRar, Adobe Acrobat Reader and 7-Zip. 5% of PCs also still had ancient versions of auxiliary software, such as Java or Windows Live Mesh. The operating system had been updated on most computers.

The Consumers’ Association asked 442 consumers how they update their computers. 89 percent of respondents use the automatic Windows update function for this. Only 59 percent regularly check whether their software is updated.

Consumers can have their computers scanned on the ScanCirle.com website. After a few seconds, a comprehensive report of possible security issues will appear on the screen. Both hardware and software problems are discussed.
