Popular influencer Pokimane has provided some more explanation about her departure from Twitch, where she was one of the most popular female (game) streamers for years. It has also become clear that she will not stop streaming itself.
Goodbye Twitch, hello YouTube
Apparently Pokimane’s exclusivity contract with Twitch had expired and was not renewed. As a result, she is now “free” and has decided to leave Twitch behind and instead focus on other streaming platforms, such as YouTube and TikTok. She has now completed her first major livestream on YouTube.
Criticism of Twitch
The fact that she leaves Twitch for what it is has to do with several things, but in general there are a lot of things going on for Pokimane at Twitch that she does not agree with.
For example, she calls Twitch’s policy “messy.” She refers to the fact that Twitch often does not know how to respond to incidents and that decisions are often simply reversed. The recent fiasco surrounding sexually explicit content is an example of this.
Furthermore, Pokimane believes that Twitch has recently started to drift more and more into a toxic male-dominated community where streamers make each other’s lives miserable in order to benefit themselves financially. In that respect, according to Pokimane, diversity has made way for “manosphere, red pill bullshit.”
Finally, Pokimane also believes that Twitch is not sufficiently successful in creating a safe environment for both streamers and viewers and she hopes that parent company Amazon will take more initiative to put things right.
No final goodbye
Although Pokimane now seems to be focusing on other platforms, such as YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, her departure from Twitch would not necessarily be permanent. “Sometimes” she would still be seen on Twitch, although she did not really elaborate on that.
