Phone (2a) is coming: affordable Nothing Phone

Android fans have been waiting for the Nothing Phone (2a) for months. The smartphone has already appeared several times in leaked photos and there are also a lot of rumors about the price and specifications. We now know for sure that the phone is coming, because the Phone 2a is confirmed in the first Community Update of 2024.

With the Phone (2a), Nothing says it focuses on users who care less about the best specifications, and more about the unique design and software: Nothing OS. According to rumors, the phone runs on a slower Dimensity 7200 chip and has a size of 6.7 inches. The device is therefore, as it were, a less extensive version of the Phone (2), but better than the Phone (1).

It is not yet known when exactly the smartphone will be launched. There is a good chance that Nothing will show more of the Phone (2a) at the Mobile World Congress, which will take place in Barcelona at the end of February. The new smartphone is expected to be a lot cheaper than its predecessor.

Light installation will (hopefully) become more useful

In addition to a new smartphone, Nothing has also announced the Glyph Developer Kit. This allows app developers to use the light installation on the back of the Nothing Phone (1) and (2) with their apps, in order to display more information on the back of the phones.

Both Nothing Phones are known for the striking lights on the back, but in practice they appear to have more gimmick then useful. Besides viewing notifications or your battery percentage, setting a timer or using it as a flash, the LED strips have few functions. The Glyph Developer Kit should change this.

More about Nothing

Nothing will undoubtedly make the Phone (2a) a striking smartphone again. In the past we also tested the Phone (1) and Phone (2). You can read the review conclusion of the latter below.

The Nothing Phone (2) is a solid smartphone that delivers excellent performance in almost every area. The phone takes good photos, the battery life is excellent and we also have little to complain about the speed, software and support.

The back with LEDs is unique and the new options are nice, but still very limited. …

… However, the Phone (2) is certainly interesting to consider if you are looking for a powerful all-rounder in this price segment, provided you like the unique LEDs.
