Instagram is experimenting with disabling read receipts in DMs. Instagram CEO Mark Zuckerberg and CEO Adam Mosseri confirm this.
A confirmation currently appears under sent messages once the recipient has opened and seen them. The new functionality without read receipts is now being tested by a limited number of users on Instagram, Adam Mosseri announced on his broadcast channel on Tuesday evening. He added a screenshot of the setting.
“We’ve listened to your feedback and started testing a new feature that will allow you to disable read receipts in your DMs. Soon people will be able to choose whether they want to show others when they have read their messages,” Mosseri said. It is not yet clear when the feature will be rolled out to all users.
On WhatsApp, also part of Meta, it has been possible to disable read receipts for some time. It is not yet possible to disable read receipts with Messenger, Meta has not stated whether the intention is to also make the functionality available on that platform.
