What can we expect from the Yellow Tigers?

It is only the second time that the Yellow Tigers have qualified for the Volleyball World Cup. Eight years ago in Italy, the Belgian volleyball players stranded in the second group stage and finished 11th in the final standings.

“As 12th in the world ranking – our highest position ever – reaching the second round is the minimum goal,” says national coach Gert Vande Broek. “We want to confirm our place in the world rankings and finish between 12th and 14th place.”

Are the quarterfinals unattainable? “For that we would have to stunt not once, but twice against a top country such as Italy or China. That cannot be a realistic goal. The dream is to stunt once and go towards 10th place in the final standings.”

For that, the Yellow Tigers will have to be there immediately at the World Cup. “The opening game against Puerto Rico is crucial. Puerto Rico is just behind us in the world ranking (18th). It is annoying to have to start against Puerto Rico, because a misstep is difficult to correct.”

What else do you need to know about the Volleyball World Cup?

Where will the World Cup take place? With the Netherlands and Poland, there are two host countries. The Yellow Tigers play all their games in the Netherlands (Arnhem and possibly Rotterdam and Apeldoorn). The final will be played in the Gelredome in Arnhem.

What is the tournament like?

  • 24 countries participate in the World Cup and are divided into 4 groups of 6 teams. The top 4 of each group advance to the second group stage.
  • In the second group stage, the 16 remaining teams end up in 2 groups of 8 countries. The results from the first group stage (achieved against the countries that also advance) are included. Each country will therefore still play 4 matches in that phase.
  • The top 4 of each group may advance to the quarter-finals, from then on, there will be a direct elimination until the final.

Who is the defending champion? Four years ago, Serbia was crowned world champion. The Serbian women were too strong for Italy in the final after a tiebreak.

Who are the favourites? As an Olympic champion, the United States is one of the favorites for the World Cup, but the role of top favorite is reserved for European champions Italy, which also won the Volley Nations League this year. In addition, we are on the lookout for Olympic finalist Brazil and defending champion Serbia. China, Japan and Turkey are outsiders for the world title.
