Last summer there were many question marks behind the name of Mathieu van der Poel. He withdrew from the Tour due to a lousy form, then won three smaller races in preparation for the world championship.

“I have done everything I can to be in order for this World Cup,” says Van der Poel. “I know my body well, but in the Tour we also saw that it is not an exact science.”

“Occasionally things don’t go the way you want and the human body is not a machine. It can sometimes be bad, but I do have the feeling that I am good. Otherwise I would not have traveled. Whether it is enough for Sunday, I know you never. But I’ll go for it.”

“I hope that one day in my career I can become world champion”, the Dutchman kicks in an open door. “That I can ‘check’ that off my list.”

“It is such a difficult race to win and I have only entered twice. That was not bad in itself, but everyone knows the story of the hunger knock in Harrogate. The following year in Leuven I just came back after my back injury.”

“It was certainly not a fiasco twice, but I hope to be closer to it on Sunday. I am also getting older by a day,” says Van der Poel. “The chances of grabbing that rainbow jersey are getting smaller every year.”
