The Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten has suffered a stable fracture in the elbow during her fall in the Mixed Team Relay at the World Cycling Championships in Wollongong (Australia). “I can cycle, but it depends on the pain,” says Van Vleuten. A final decision on whether or not to participate in the road race will be made later this week.

National coach Loes Gunnewijk will consult closely with Annemiek van Vleuten and the national doctor in the coming days. ”Annemiek is allowed to cycle with this stable fracture, but the question is of course with how much pain that will be. We will see that in the coming days. We hope that Annemiek can still start, but that has to be justified.” If Van Vleuten is unable to drive, no replacement will be called up.

Olympic time trial champion Van Vleuten had a serious crash on Wednesday immediately after the start of the Mixed Team Relay with the Dutch team. “My front tire exploded”, a particularly disappointed Van Vleuten told the NOS. But afterwards it turned out that her band only exploded when Van Vleuten was already falling. The Dutch also admitted this via social media. “I don’t know what happened but from the footage it looks like my front tire didn’t explode until I hit the side of the road. Something caused me to lose my balance. Whatever it was, it won’t change my current situation.”

Van Vleuten immediately went to the hospital for examinations. “I just have a lot of pain and my elbow doesn’t feel right. My whole side is bruised. I’m worried about Saturday. I was not waiting for this. I can’t believe what happened.”

Leaving hospital

Meanwhile, Van Vleuten announced via social media that she has already left the hospital. “Back from the hospital,” she tweeted. “I was super supported there. Stable fracture in my elbow, no surgery needed. I can ride a bike, but it depends on the pain. Hopefully I can sleep. At least I can laugh with the photo below,” she concluded with a joke.

“The people who examined me wished me luck,” the Olympic time trial champion added in an interview with the NOS after she left the hospital. “It is nice that it would be medically justified to participate. Tomorrow I will first ride on the rollers and from there we will look further. It is not a long-term problem, I also know that this injury will not last forever,” said the fallen top favorite for the World Cup.
