New sound recording from just before plane crash with footballer Emiliano Sala: frightened pilot says he will “wear a life jacket”

The pilot of the plane that crashed with footballer Emiliano Sala on board had little confidence in his aircraft. British broadcaster BBC obtained a recording of pilot David Ibbotson announcing to wear a “life jacket” during the ill-fated flight. He also told a friend that the plane is “unreliable”

Sala was killed in 2019 while on a flight from France to the United Kingdom. At the time, 28-year-old Argentinian Sala made the switch from French club Nantes to Cardiff City. His plane disappeared from radar over The Channel. Sala’s body has been found, but the remains of the pilot have not been found.

The BBC discovered that after his earlier flight to Nantes, Ibbotson had telephoned a fellow pilot to complain about his aircraft. He is said to have heard a suspicious noise in the air. “I was halfway through the Channel when I heard a bang,” said the pilot. Also, a pedal would not have worked properly. “This aircraft has to go back into the hangar.”

Sala wasn’t sure about it either. He sent another voice message to friends from the plane, saying he was “afraid”: “The device seems to be falling apart…”
