Remco Evenepoel is ready for the most important stage of his career: “The nerves are a little tighter”

Does he take it or not? Evenepoel can lay the Vuelta in a definitive fold today. He realizes that all too well.

“In principle it is a stage like any other, but today it is really the last decisive one. That makes it a little more special, so that the nerves are also tense. Normally it should go like the past few days. I hope for the best for me and for my team.”

“The start and the penultimate climb will be crucial today. They are the most dangerous today. The first climb follows at 25 kilometers so it is important to be good with it. I will try to follow Mas’s wheel as much as possible, especially because I assume that certain cards can still be drawn on the penultimate climb,” said Evenepoel. “There is no need to attack yourself, but if I could, why not?”

“There are so many emotions going through you. You start to dream more and more and to believe that it is possible. We’ll see how it goes. My lead is normally sufficient. Today is all about keeping your head up. Remain grouped as a team as long as possible and keep an eye on the flight”, continues Evenepoel.

Team mates Louis Vervaeke and Ilan Van Wilder also had their say. “It is so close, but he also knows that it will be a very difficult stage and that it is not yet in,” says Vervaeke. “It is exciting. I also feel a bit of tension”, Van Wilder opens again. “It’s a special day. It will be the most important 180 kilometers of our lives. We will do everything we can to make this day as beautiful as possible.”

Only one person can still throw a spanner in the works: first assailant Enric Mas. “I will still try to win the jersey, but we will see how it goes. It is the penultimate stage and there are still five cols on the program. Ideal to try something else. Only I honestly don’t know whether Evenepoel will have a weakness. He beat me in the previous mountain stage. We will see.”
