The first day of the Italian Grand Prix weekend has already come to an end. At the iconic Monza circuit, the fastest time was set by Carlos Sainz. The second fastest time in this second free practice was set by Max Verstappen. In the last session of Friday the top three was completed by Charles Leclerc.
In the Italian afternoon it quickly became crowded on the Monza circuit. Max Verstappen, Kevin Magnussen, Carlos Sainz, Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez, among others, took to the track. Sainz had a hard time right away and went wide in the first corner, the Spaniard was certainly not the only one who went wrong in the corner in question. The Ferrari driver was immediately very fast, just like his teammate Leclerc and Verstappen.
But not everyone was on their way quickly in Monza. The Haas team practiced the slipstreaming but they couldn’t enjoy it for long. Mick Schumacher had a very unfortunate session. The German, who had to watch in the first training session, told his team that there was no more power. Haas did some more research but it was soon made clear to Schumacher that he had to park his car on the side of the track. The red flag came out and the rest of the drivers returned to the pit lane.
However, Yuki Tsunoda did not do that in the correct way and has to report to the stewards after the training. The Japanese was not the only one who experienced an unpleasant session. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton and George Russell had another difficult day. Both drivers complained of bottoming and balance issues. They got away with the times well. Russell was fifth and Hamilton was seventh.
The big surprise of the second free practice was Lando Norris. The British McLaren driver recorded the fourth time at 0.674 from Sainz. The difference between the top three was very small in practice at the Monza circuit. Leclerc was third and only 0.193 short of his teammate. Number two Max Verstappen only had to give up 0.143 seconds to his Spanish competitor.
