Standard continues its advance in the competition. In and against STVV it went with 1-2 to get the three points. The last victory of the Rouches at Stayen dates back to 2007 (!). Dragus and an own goal from Leistner provided the two Liège goals. Christian Brüls softened for the home team from the spot, but got no further than that. Standard takes nine out of nine, STVV four out of nine.
STVV started with one change in the starting eleven compared to the Limburg derby of a week ago. Stan Van Dessel took hold on the left flank to the detriment of Robert Bauer. Aboubakary Koita and sniper Gianni Bruno started on the bench. Many summer transfers in the dug-out at Standard, Nicolas Raskin was present in the base.
Everything happened under the approving eye of Marc Wilmots, who gave the kick-off. Both teams started with attacking intentions. Especially STVV brought nice combinations on the mat, only the last pass was not found in Arnaud Bodart’s sixteen. Also because Standard put down a good organization at the back. Leistner tried twice after standing still, but the German captain’s headers were too weak.
The first big scoring opportunity came halfway through the first half for Standard. Initiated after Konaté lost possession. A cross from the left flank was headed in hard by Dewaele. The save of goalkeeper Schmidt was of great class. Still, STVV turned out to be of his milk. A few minutes later, the opening was found through the center. Dragus was served, the striker beat a hopeless Schmidt this time: 0-1 actually. Sint-Truiden wanted to react, but again the passes in the last part of the field were not threatening enough.
Just before the camp change, STVV took a serious blow. Leistner worked poorly. The captain tried to recover after the visitors’ center but unfortunately deviated the ball into his own goal. A cold shower for STVV on the stroke of rest. The Rouches supporters celebrated.
Coach Hollerbach made three changes. Boya, Bruno and Koita came before Kagawa, Hayashi and Van Dessel. Hoping to put the flame in the pan. Pressure certainly came from the home team, the ball did not fall well in the fourth quarter, despite a lot of good will.
Dame Fortuna had to lend a hand to Sint-Truiden and literally did. Hands by Bokadi were penalized with a penalty. Brüls did not fail: 1-2, another match. STVV now even camped at half of Standard. Koita lay in wait and fired, but the frame was missed.
Standard held its ground and waited for the deadly counterattack. Davida cut Schmidt out after another nice action, but then aimed for the post. There was no really fiery final phase. Koita mounted the actions, but Bodart did not give up. Standard three points richer, STVV needs to think again.
