On Friday evening, 23-year-old Stijn Dewitte, a fervent supporter of Cercle Brugge, received a blow from behind.

The young man went to see the match against Club Brugge with some friends on Friday. “On the way home, we were repeatedly accused of being blamed,” he tells Het Laatste Nieuws.

“We remained calm and deliberately did not respond to it. Just when I thought we were ‘safe’, it happened. They attacked me from behind and I fell to the ground.”

According to witnesses, the attackers were wearing a blue-black outfit. “I don’t know what happened after that. But according to my friends, they kept kicking my head.”

Only when other supporters intervened, including some from Club Brugge, did the perpetrators flee. “I don’t know how many kicked my head. I only remember everything from the moment I was in the hospital.”

Dewitte will have to undergo a few more operations. He suffered a broken eye socket, jaw and nose from the incident. “Why was such violence necessary? We didn’t argue with anyone, were just on the way home… Is it just because I was wearing a green-black scarf?”
