Every week, former referee Serge Gumienny watches Belgian football, looking for mistakes by the referees.
His story begins this weekend in the Bruges derby. “There Lawrence Visser should always have drawn red for the attack by Cercle player Marcellin on Club midfielder Nielsen. It is also incomprehensible that the VAR did nothing there,” says Gumienny in Het Belang van Limburg.
“This was a dark red, a tackle with such intensity at knee level is a death kick. For me, this is the biggest refereeing blunder of the season so far. I am curious what explanation the Referee Department will give to this.”
Gumienny also has something to say about Konaté’s alleged elbow on El Khannous. “I can’t understand why an experienced ref/VAR like Verboomen intervenes here. Surely a VAR can only do that in the event of a ‘clear and obvious error’? While this was no more than a fait diverse. It only strengthens Vergoote’s performance by sticking to his decision, because the psychological pressure must have been enormous at that time.”
