At Israel Premier-Tech they must have had a little party. The Israeli cycling team in a relegation place and threatens to disappear from the WorldTour next year. So they can use all the points and so Vanmarcke’s first victory since the Bretagne Classic in 2019 came as a result.

He was part of a leading group of 25 riders early on, together with team mate Jenthe Biermans. That would also be the winner after the lead rose to more than four minutes and the peloton could barely make up any ground. After a tough hill zone, the leading group thinned out to twelve, with Vanmarcke and Biermans.

“It was a more difficult race than expected,” said Vanmarcke. “The first 120 kilometers were tough, but due to the heat and the long day in the break, the final turned out to be very difficult. It really was one hill after another and it took its toll. EF Education started to pick up the pace, after which the leading group broke in two. Everyone started to feel it, one by one. But I knew I had to be there if the group was going to break again.”

At the local circuit (four laps of 12 kilometers) in Baltimore, five riders separated from the rest, after which Vanmarcke was the strongest in a sprint. He won ahead of Nickolas Zukowsky (Human Powered Health) and Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost). Biermans finished seventh.

“I wanted to win for the team today,” it sounds. “I’m so relieved. It had been a while since I was able to win a race due to illness and injuries. Now I’m back. The road here was tough. I was still on the bum with bruised ribs, but it’s nice that the train is back on track.”
