When Nick Kyrgios plays, there is always something going on. His last match was no different. He made a remarkable blunder during his eighth final at the US Open against Daniil Medvedev. The Australian stormy waters managed to give away a won point after all.

What had happened? Well: Medvedev didn’t get the ball over the net in the beginning of the third set, but suddenly Kyrgios crossed the field to finish it off with a convincing smash. A painful mistake, as ‘Kygs’ didn’t let the ball hit Medvedev’s side. As a result, the point promptly went to the Russian.

“I honestly thought this was allowed,” Kyrgios said. “I looked like an idiot, this is on television everywhere anyway,” laughed the Australian, who finally settled with defending champion Medvedev. Kyrgios won in four sets (7-6 (13/11), 3-6, 6-3 and 6-2) and will face Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals.

Level of Djokovic and Nadal

“I’m very happy to finally be able to show how well I can play in New York,” said Kyrgios, who is in the quarterfinals for the first time at the US Open. “This is a very nice victory. I am proud of my achievement. Beating the world number one on Arthur Ashe is an incredible experience.”

Medvedev will therefore not succeed himself as the winner of the US Open. “I am very disappointed,” he admitted. “The match went straight until the third set. Then he got a little stronger. Physically I started to feel some discomfort and that may have become the key to the match. Nick played today at a very high level, comparable to that of Novak (Djokovic, ed.) and Rafa (Nadal, ed.). He is a tough opponent, has an incredible serve and masters all shots. I will give him every chance to win the title.”
