Hamilton could smell the victory: “The car has never been so good”

Lewis Hamilton seemed to be able to take his first win of the year in Zandvoort. The British Mercedes driver drove a very strong race in the dunes of North Holland. Hamilton was in the lead in the final phase but during the Safety Car phase things went tactically wrong.

Unlike Max Verstappen and George Russell, among others, Hamilton did not change his tires under the Safety Car. The Briton drove on older tires than his rivals. At the restart Hamilton was the sitting duck and Verstappen immediately overtook him. In the end, the furious Hamilton fell back to fourth.

Never been so good

After the race Hamilton was a bit calmer than during the race. The cooled Brit appeared in front of Sky Sports’ microphone afterwards: “I think today we had the car to win. In these circumstances we lost a lot under VSC and SC. I think the car and the strategy are very good. were up to that point with the pit stops. The car has never been better this season. The guys were doing a really good job.”

Emotions

Hamilton hoped for a 1-2 for his team, but that dream did not come true. During the race he realized that too and after the failed strategy he was furious about the on-board radio: “I lost myself very briefly. I think they know it’s passion. I like to see the glass half full. We struggled in Spa and here we could suddenly fight with the Red Bulls.”
