Seven in a row: Antwerp equals the best start to the season since 1930 with a simple victory against Westerlo

We witnessed a piece of history on the Tawny Owl. Antwerp won against Westerlo for the seventh time in a row and thus equals the best start to the season since 1930. Westerlo urgently needs to take points again with a view to retention.

Four goals in one week. The story of the strikers and the ketchup bottle – once it splashes out, it immediately bursts with heaps – also applies to Vincent Janssen. The Dutchman gave Antwerp the lead with a perfect penalty, which was provoked by Jurgen Ekkelenkamp. The summer acquisition was again preferred over Radja Nainggolan, although the season started well, and that paid off via that penalty. Ekkelenkamp himself was less fortunate in the finish.

Until that 1-0, PhD student Westerlo kept pace with the leader of the standings. It created a few moments, but Jean Butez never had to make miracle saves. Antwerp wasn’t super dangerous either, until it got help from De Cuyper in the box: the ball landed on the spot, De Bosuil was allowed to cheer: 1-0 at the break.

After the break, Westerlo immediately threatened via Nene: Butez had to parry his volley. However, it was Antwerp that scored after a nice collective attack on the switch. Janssen was a strong point of reference – he is getting better match after match -, Yusuf sent debutant Calvin Stengs away, he operated the running Ekkelenkamp nearby. The attacking midfielder cracked his shot and provided the perfect assist to the well-followed Miyoshi: 2-0, match played.

In the final phase, the supporters were allowed to celebrate again. Substitute Anthony Valencia took care of the 3-0 final score with his head. The wing forward is always a pleasure to watch.

Antwerp will start the season with seven wins in a row and thus equal the best season start since 1930. A pity about the European elimination, but for now the choice for Mark van Bommel seems to turn out very well. It may be clear that this Antwerp will play for the title this season. Anderlecht, for example, already follows on eleven points – just to say…

Westerlo, on the other hand, was unable to offer enough opposition in Deurne Noord. The Ruffs have been charming since their return, but it is also urgent to take some more points. For now, it only has six, which puts it at the bottom of the standings. As a reminder, there are three relegates this season.
