The first kilometers of the queen stage towards Sierra Nevada in the Vuelta have not gone without a hitch. After just two kilometers Wilco Kelderman (BORA-hansgrohe), eighth in the standings, fell. The Dutchman grabbed his collarbone, but was able to continue his way with a painful grimace and a lot of scrapes.

Domenico Pozzovivo fared less well. The 39-year-old Italian of Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert fell in the same crash and had to give up. Earlier this year, Pozzovivo finished eighth in the Giro. He had so far had a colorless Vuelta.

Not much later Lucas Hamilton also came into contact with the asphalt. Hamilton crashed when going round a roundabout, but was soon able to get back on his bike.
