formula 1Max Verstappen won a blistering race in Zandvoort. Mercedes and especially Lewis Hamilton bit off after a tactical joust. But in the end, the World Cup leader in his own country provided a frenzied Orange party. Hamilton was furious with his engineers.

In somewhat foggy conditions, Leclerc gave a beeping sound at the start, but pole packer Verstappen kept his first place all in all easily. He then steadily increased his lead over the Monegask. The danger would not come from Ferrari. Certainly not because they messed up hard at the pit stop of Sainz – who started third. Sainz lost 12 seconds due to a defective tire change. “What a mess”, Ferrari boss Binotto was angry.

The danger came from… Mercedes, where they initially opted for a one-stop. Hamilton, who started fourth and switched to the hard tire halfway through the race, passed the two Ferraris and approached the World Cup leader very quickly before Verstappen’s second pit stop. “This doesn’t feel spectacular”, the home driver started to worry a bit.

When Tsunoda parked his car to the side and a virtual safety car arrived, it played into Verstappen’s cards. Economically, the Dutchman was able to pick up his second set of tires without getting behind Hamilton. But the devil was in the tail…

Because there was also a real safety car when Bottas’ Alfa Romeo came to a halt. Verstappen dived in again – this time to the fastest softs. Hamilton stayed on track and went to P1, but had to do it with slower rubber. It turned out to be a crucial decision for both teams.

“It’s going to be difficult to keep Max behind me,” Hamilton realized. He got it right. Because at the restart, Verstappen flew past Hamilton after a great action on the long track. The audience went crazy.

The remaining ten laps were a breeze for Verstappen. Hamilton still got the faster Russell and Leclerc. He was furious at his ingenuity and the tire choice.

The Orange party only got bigger because of it. Verstappen records his fourth consecutive win and increases his lead in the World Cup standings.
