Remco Evenepoel did not give a beaten impression, despite the loss of time. “Obviously it wasn’t my best day,” he admitted. “I didn’t have the best legs and couldn’t accelerate when Roglic went.

“But I still have 1 minute and 50 seconds left, so there’s no need to panic now. I think I’ve already taken more time on him than he did on me. I had to go at my own pace, but I went a little overboard anyway.”

“All in all, I break away at 4 kilometers from the finish and don’t park completely. Mas only drives away from me for 20 seconds. In the end it’s not very bad and Roglic was actually just better than the rest.”

How is Evenepoel going to try to process this tap? “By eating well and sleeping well”, our compatriot in his red leader’s jersey laughed. “It’s good that I don’t collapse completely, but you’d rather not lose so much time to stay comfortable. Now is the time to recover and survive tomorrow.”

Because Evenepoel still bears the consequences of his unfortunate fall on Thursday. José De Cauwer also said during the broadcast that the impact of this on a body should not be underestimated.

“Remco says he doesn’t feel anything from that fall, but a body always reacts to a fall,” says our analyst. “The first day after a body is not yet in response, but the second day those injuries will play up and you get an extra reaction.”

A tweet from ex-rider Thijs Zonneveld confirmed that suspicion. He noticed that Evenepoel got off his bicycle with a burden on his right hip.

“I still had some stiff muscles, it was also the second day after my fall,” Evenepoel said about it. “Tomorrow should be better and then there will be a rest day. It’s normal to feel it in the days after a fall, but I’m not going to use it as an excuse. I just didn’t have the best legs. Hopefully this was my bad day.”
