The last free practice on the Zandvoort circuit is over. In the North Holland dunes, the drivers were given the opportunity to prepare for qualifying later today. The fastest time was recorded by Charles Leclerc. Behind him, second time was a prey for George Russell. Behind that Max Verstappen completed the top three.
The many thousands of orange fans in the stands in Zandvoort had to wait a long time for the action in the third free practice. Sergio Perez was the first on track but most of his colleagues were left behind in the pit lane. The Aston Martins of Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll soon followed but were significantly less active than Perez. Other than that, it remained quiet and everyone waited patiently.
Ten minutes into the session, there was a loud cheer in the stands. Home favorite Max Verstappen took to the track and the same was true for the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell and the Ferraris of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc. Verstappen was immediately fast and recorded a time that was more than half a second faster than the competition. Verstappen’s teammate Perez was clearly on a different schedule and drove the most laps of everyone.
Verstappen’s fast time stood still for quite some time. Halfway through the session, the teams were clearly busy with things other than fast times. George Russell had another frightening moment when he nearly ran over a pair of pigeons. His teammate Lewis Hamilton also had to act quickly. The British seven-time world champion was on a fast lap when he had to swerve for Yuki Tsunoda. The Japanese drove in the middle of the apex in a blind bend.
Tsunoda was not the only driver to get in the way of his colleagues. In the final phase, for example, it also became a bit tight between Perez and Sainz. Verstappen had meanwhile lost his fastest time to Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari driver recorded a 1:11:632 and was only 0.066 seconds faster than Russell. Verstappen got stuck in third place and was 0.161 seconds slower than Leclerc’s fastest time. Remarkably enough, the entire top eleven remained within a second of the fastest time.
