Ex-top athlete Kim Gevaert has already experienced many nerve-wracking moments in her career. Nevertheless, the brand new meeting director of the Memorial Van Damme was a bit stressed beforehand before her directorial debut. “I have to admit that I was more nervous than I expected,” she said afterwards.
“Now that it’s over, a lot of pressure is off me. It’s all a lot at the same time if you are responsible, but the head is off and hopefully it will go a little smoother every year from now on. But first I have to a few weeks.”
The supporters in the King Baudouin Stadium saw a lot of great performances on the track yesterday. A successful sporting edition, therefore. “I can’t complain with two national records and three best world year performances,” said Gevaert.
“That 400 meters is close to my heart because the Belgian record until last year belonged to me and because I really like Cynthia Bolingo. It was a very nice evening.”
“In addition, there were a few nice highlights, such as the attack on the women’s world record high jump, which nobody expected.
“We can therefore be very satisfied. The public has also reacted very enthusiastically, especially to the Belgian heroes. That is nice to see.”
“Behind the scenes things don’t always go according to plan, Gevaert now also knows. “You are always faced with surprises. You have to respond to unexpected events and that is not always obvious.”
“For example, I was only told at the very last moment that we did not receive approval to set off fireworks. That takes some adjustment, but luckily we have a top team here with very strong people,” she concluded.
